「楽しい英会話」の会の記録(20200527)

Here is a talk from ラジオ英会話.

Topic is compromises. Such as “all the same” , “in spite of”,"however", "whether".

First story is Two colleagues are talking about coming to work on holiday.

a Ben, do you have a minute?

b Sure, Tia. What's up?

a Can you come in work tomorrow? Something just came up today.

b Tomorrow? It's a holiday.

a I understand it's a holiday. All the same, we need you to come to.

b Normally, we would say no problem. But we are having an important family reunion tomorrow I can't possibly miss.

a Well, I guess, it can't be helped, then OK. Don't worry about it.

b Thank you, Tia.

I treated like a queen. Still, she wasn't satisfied.

Second story is Two colleagues are talking about one took the day off.

 

a You took the day off yesterday.

b Yes, I promised to take my girlfriend to a theme park.

a I thought you  hated places like that.

b I did. But she loves them. Luckily, it was not 

 so crowded yesterday.

a Oh, right. It was raining all day.

b I was thinking of cancelling. But we went there in spite of the bad weather.

a Did you have a good time?

b I did. But I enjoyed the hot bath at home afterwards more.

key sentence is We went there inspit of the bad weather.

In spite of shyness, he ask her for a date.

They got married despite the difference in their ages.

She never put on weight despite the fact that she eats like a horse! 

 

Third story is Two persons are talking about one was injured.

a What happened to your finger? Did you cut yourself?

b I'm afraid I did. I had a little accident in the kitchen.

a Were you peering potatoes again?

b No, not, this time. I was tryimg to open a new jar of strawberry jam, but however hard I tried, I couldn't open it.

b So, how did you cut yourself?

a I ended up using a can opener and my hand slipped. I did finally open the jam, though.

Whatever you say, some people will misunderstand you.

Whoever you pick as captain, we will suppot you.

No matter howhard I tried, I couldn't open it.

Whatever you want, I will get it for you.

Wherever you go, I will follow you.

No matter when you go, there are always long lines.

 

Last story is a son and his mother are talking about his home work.

 

a Tot, what are you doing playing with your phone?

You promised to do your home work.

b Mom, you're supposed to knock the door, first.

a Don't be smart with me, young man.

b But I don't want to do my home work.

a Whether you like it or not, you have to do it.

b History is so boring.

a I have an idea. Try watching history videos made with dancing and rap music.

You will learn a lot and have fun at the same time.

key sentence is whether you like it or not, you have to do it.

I don't care if you have no money.

I don't care even if you have no money.

Even though he never smiles, he always makes me smile.

Whether you like or not, this is a rule, so you have to respect it.
