Today's presentation,  I speak radio英会話 as usual.

Topic is verb,  giving type verb  give, provide, offer, cost.

At first  give

Story  Two person are talking about their airconditioner's sale. 

a It's getting hotter and hotter. So it's a great chance to sell more airconditioners. 

b We're alredy doing well. Sales are clearly up on last year.

a I know. But we can do even better. I want you to work every weekend this month.

b Every weekend? Give me a break, boss. That's impossible.

a I will give you a big bonus at the end of the month.

b Oh.  Well. OK then.

key sentence  

Give me a break. それは勘弁してください。

give has many various meanings.

Don’t give me your cold.

君のかぜをうつさないでくれよ。

I’ll give you a ride home.

家まで車に乗せて行ってあげるよ。

The roof gave under his weight.

屋根は彼の重さで壊れた。

Give in, give up

 You’re giving me a headache.

君は僕にとって、頭痛のたねだよ。

Second   provide

Story  Two person are talking about their employ's creativity.

a Thank you for that interesting presentation.

b You're welcome. I hope you will consider using our product.

a Yes, we're interested. We want our emploee to be more creative.

b That's  the aim of our company. Our office tools will help to inspire creativity.

a For our next meeting,  we would like to visit your office.

b Excellent. I 'll make the arrangement. If you have questions, I will provide answers.

a Thank you very much.

If you have questions,I will provide answers.

Such verb as provide look like supply, present.

 A basic idea here is there always needed. So the emphasis is on the continuous flow.

 All the city’s water is supplied from this reservoir.

この都市で使われる水はすべてこの貯水池から供給されている。

  The club supplies all team members with uniforms.

 


Next   offer

Story  Two person are talking about one's promotion. 

a I almost didn't recognize you. You look different in a suit.

b I had to buy some new clothes because my company offered me a much better position.

a Congratulations. What are you doing?

b It's a sales position. I have to meet a lot of clients.

a Great. You started at the company only a few months ago, didn't you?

b Yes. I've been so busy.


key sentence 

My company offered me a much better position.

会社はこれまでよりもずっといい役職を提供してくれました。

Such verb as offer look like read, make, teach. 

Read me that email again, will you?

My dad made me a paper airplane.

My parents taught me good manners.



Last   cost

Story  Two person are talking about one's daughter's wedding.

a Thank you for inviting us to your barbecue.

b Thanks for coming. Here, you have to try this corn.

a It's so good. By the way, Is your daughter coming?

b No. She is still in Hawaii on her honrymoon.

a Right. You said she got marriged to a doctor.

b Yes, he is a nice guy. My daugter's wedding cost me a fortune.

a I can imagine. A wedding in Hawaii sounds nice, thogh.

娘の結婚式には大金がかかりました。

Such verb as cost is called negative giving type verb and look like take, cherge, owe, cause.

 

The science homework took me three hours.

The restaurant charged us $20 for a bottle of water.

 Sorry to have caused you so much trouble.
