Plastic waste is becoming a serious environmental problem around the world.
It is compelling many countries, including Japan, to find green solutions that reduce the use of plastics.
Japan’s Nippon Paper has developed a new type of paper packaging for potato chips and other foods. It is specially designed to keep the contents fresh.
The firm is getting an increasing number of orders, and plans to create similar products.
“Using paper will help to cut the amount of plastic waste,” an official of the firm says, “We want to respond to the needs of customers who are looking for alternatives to plastic.”
Such efforts are part of a growing global trend.
Starbucks and The Walt Disney Co. are among the U.S. companies that plan to stop using disposable plastic straws.
A lot of plastic waste ends up in the ocean. The debris breaks down over time into tiny pieces of plastic, what scientists now call “microplastics.” These pollutants can get into the food chain.
